The Jive Turkey's Tale. Part 3: Frivolousness

Ok guys, it's time for part 3 of the tale. If you missed part 2:The budget years. Click Here.

Ok, so at this point I had a car that every mod thus far had been spec e30 legal, so the natural decision would be to put a cage and seat in it and work on spec e30 racing, so this was the plan.....Until I bumped across this brand new on eBay at a price that was too good to pass up.

The Jive Turkey's Tale. Part 2: The budget years.

It's time for part 2 of the e30's tale. If you missed "Part 1:The early years." Click here!

There I had it, a one dollar e30, that was suited for the track. It was still rough around the edges, but had some potential.

After sifting through receipts of what I spent getting it ready I realized I was way under budget for the Grassroots $2005 challenge. So I had a new goal for the car: Put as much lipstick on that pig as I can for <$2005. That's when I realized how much lipstick it would take. Below are a couple graphic pictures of my discoveries. This thing was going to need a paint job...

An Old man named Boots and a Love for Old School Autos.

We all know that guy, theres probably one in your neighborhood. You don't really know him but your drive by his house everyday and see him polishing, welding, and building some sick classics in his garage. You probably want to meet him, but never really got the chance. Well heres one of those guys, and next time you go out stop by and see what hes working on your never know, he may like your slammed civic hatch. (or maybe not)

Hot Rod

In the spirit of Christmas - giving and sharing and all that - I thought I would scan and share a couple of my vintage Hot Rod magazine covers.  So here they are, from the days when Men were Men and Women made them toasted sandwiches on the exhaust manifold.

Love & Lust, *RIP my beloved SV1000s*

Hello Internet, my name is Philip, most people just call me Asian Phil, some other folks like to call me Crazy Asian as well. Anyway, this is my virgin post on frivolousmotorsports, so it is a pleasure for me to be able to share my rambling here. Ish has been asking me to chime in and share some of my stuff; what's better than popping my blog cherry on Christmas Day to celebrate the birthday of our Lord Jesus Christ, our savior, 8lb 6oz, peacefully laying there...

Today I would like to share a story of my true love. It all started when I was attending GaSouthern University, in the 'boro. We were living in "The Statesboro Place", go figure. At that time I was 20, I already had my first motorcycle - a Ninja 250R. I remember my roommate dragged me to the brand new dealership on Hwy301; I told him I won't be buying anything there and I knew it was a bad idea for going with him. Guess what? I walked out with a brand new motorcycle that day, 0 miles on the odometer; talking about love in first sight.

The Jive Turkey's Tale. Part 1: The early years.

Hey frivolous people! I'm Russell, or Russ Buss if you prefer. It's my first post on the blog so, I figured I'd give you some detailed history on the e30 above, As she has been through a lot.

It was the summer of 2004 and I had a HPDE at Road Atlanta fast approaching. The only problem was the e30 that I was planning on using got t-boned 9 days before the event. At this point I couldn't get a refund, so I set out on my journey to find a replacement.

At an autocross I bumped into a guy(Dan) while working the front gate and our conversation stumbled across the topic of me looking for an e30 shell. He said he had one that had been in his basement for 3 years waiting to become his next project car. I asked if it was for sale, and he apprehensively said "sure I suppose". I asked him how much he wanted, and being a 17 year old kid at the time I could tell he didn't take me seriously, but I reassured him I had money and needed a car within the week for the HPDE at Road Atlanta. He then began to backpedal a bit, going into how it was a good chassis and he really wanted to make it a race car at some point. Right about the time he said, "I'm not sure if I want to sell it quite yet" his wife grabbed him and drug him around the other side of their pickup. A few moments later he came back around the truck, and I knew at that moment I was about to have a new e30.

He told me that if I put a race motor in his current race-car e30 then I could have the shell for $1. Yes $1. I quickly agreed sight unseen and arranged to borrow a truck and trailer. We arrived in McDonough to pick the car up the next day. Dave sweetened the deal by including a full manifold back 1 piece exhaust. Nevertheless, the basement had taken its toll on the poor car. This is what I saw when the basement door opened.

The initial view was a little disappointing.

Old School Ballin

Other than crumpets and spotted dick what do British people like?  Well among lots of other things they like Mustangs.  No-one really knows why, perhaps its because they cant afford the fuel in the UK?  The only proper thing to do when a Brit finds himself relocated in the land of baseball and apple pie is to get himself a Mustang, with a quickness.  Then he should get some baseball and apple pie.

Thats what I did.  I also got a good dental plan and spent a month at the dentist but thats another story.

Little collection of some awesome videos.

Starting with Russ Buss's e30 drift

Top Gear in Griffin Ga. Viper vs Cobra

Top Gear came to Griffin Ga, to make a short film for there new show and Friv was on the scene. Basically what is going down here, is Tanner Foust driving around with a cobra helicopter chasing him. Also a few shots of the Viper in the Griffin Cemetery. I'm guessing cause they killed the viper. :( sad face indeed. Props to Jalopnik people for the heads up.

New blog, new ideas, and a new year so close.

So today the suby was finally back on the road. and god did i miss it, that car is wonderful. If you have ever changed a timing belt (on a car you love) you know its a nail bitter till you crank it up. Its not that its a particulary hard thing to do, its just that if you mess it up by one tooth on anything, its all over for your engine. Today, the suby fired up just like it always did, fantastic. Which is a good thing, because the corolla almost didn't make it home. On the way to work and back its health slowy declined till it almost couldn't make it up the hill near my house. This.... makes me sad. I'm not sure whats wrong with it, but the valve tick on it now is realllly loud and it hesitates and feels like it has about 20% of the power. It could be fuel not getting to it, spark not happening, or maybe it just skipped timing. Its a non-interference motor so none of those are show stoppers. But it brings me to an important cross-roads with this car. The rear end is whining, the throw-out bearing is noisy, and now... the engine is well, sorta dead. Not sure where to go with from here. fix whats wrong and drive it like it is? rip it all out and redo it, swap it with something else. Its and old car, and original GT-S, a classic. I don't want to really rip it to pieces or weld in a jungle gym. but i also don't want to go through a ton of trouble just to get the same 120 hp it was making before. hummm.... car choices are tuff.

also we picked up the name racefriv.com and quicked linked it to here so we don't have to say our way to long name to people anymore. just racefriv.com also itll make better t-shirts and stickers. hopefully making to aussie over new years and hopefully we can take a journey there. and so i leave you with this pic a blank canvas (with some sketches already drawn in.)

so adding to keywords for searchs, racefriv, race friv, frivolousmotorsports, racefriv.com, frivolousmotorsports.com. there we go that should do it.
