I know that most people have seen this video but if you havent, you need to. The best video ever made explaining differentials. If you ever wondered what goes on in that pumpkin between your wheels watch this. It will blow your mind on how simple they explain it. Also its about a 70 year old video so thats fun too!
I do have to say that is the best explanation I have seen describing what a differential is, let alone what it does.
